Penguins' Ryan Graves Nets First Goal of Season in 5-3 Victory Over Blues

Pittsburgh (AP) - Ryan Graves netted a goal just 2 minutes and 17 seconds into the match, and the Pittsburgh Penguins maintained their lead throughout as they defeated the St. Louis Blues with a score of 5-3 on Thursday evening.

Graves' goal it was his first of the season , and Conor Timmins tossed a shot over the stick-side shoulder of the goalie Jordan Binnington extended Pittsburgh's advantage to 2-0 just over 2 1/2 minutes into the second period.

Zack Bolduc scored a power-play goal With 8 minutes and 25 seconds remaining in the second period, they reduced the St. Louis deficit to 2-1.

Connor Dewar deflected a pass from Blake Lizotte into the goal with 2 minutes and 18 seconds remaining in the second period, making the score 3-1. Both Timmins and Dewar were obtained last week in a trade involving the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Dylan Holloway scored an additional power-play goal for St. Louis just under 90 seconds into the third period. Shortly after, Pittsburgh’s Bryan Rust responded around six minutes later. Later, Alexey Toropchenko's goal put St. Louis ahead at 4-3 with roughly 11 minutes left in the game.

Rickard Rakell scored an empty-netter in the final moments of the game.

Takeaways

Dewar joined the list as the 27th scorer for the Penguins this season, making them have the highest number of scorers in the NHL.

Trouble for Blues: After Rust’s goal pushed the Penguins ahead by two at the 7:15 mark of the third period, Binnington was replaced. This seemed like an odd decision when considering his status as both a long-standing starter and the reigning champion with Team Canada in the 4 Nations Face-Off, particularly with the game hanging in the balance.

Key moment

Immediately following Dewar’s goal, Tristan Jarry denied consecutive attempts by Jordan Kyrou in the final moments of the period, and the Penguins headed into the third frame with a 3-1 advantage.

Key stat

Jarry recorded 33 saves for the Penguins and has now gone 7-1-0 against St. Louis, with an impressive record of 5-0-0 when playing at PPG Paints Arena.

Up next

On Saturday, St. Louis will play against Minnesota. Meanwhile, Pittsburgh will be hosting New Jersey on Saturday.
