Manchester United vs Real Sociedad: Bruno Fernandes' Hat-Trick Steals the Show in Thrilling Europa League Clash

LIVE – Last update at 12:17 AM

Manchester United defeated Real Sociedad 5-2 on aggregate to secure a spot in the quarter-finals of the Europa League Following Bruno Fernandes' hat-trick, they secured a 4-1 win that evening.

Ruben Amorim ’s side were tied at 1-1 in the initial match in San Sebastian last week and suffered an early setback when Mikel Oyarzabal converted from the spot after Matthijs de Ligt’s clumsy challenge.

But United hit back quickly with a penalty of their own from Fernandes and the Portuguese punished the hosts with another strike from 12 yards following a foul on the lively Patrick Dorgu.

The Spanish outfit’s hopes were then dashed when Dorgu proved too quick and slippery for Venezuela’s Jon Aramburu, who made contact as the Dane was poised to dash through on goal. Fernandes’ ruthless finish after a clinical counter-attack saw the Portuguese register his hat-trick to break La Real’s resistance and Diogo Dalot hit a late fourth to put some gloss on the aggregate scoreline.

And a win was the perfect response for Ruben Amorim after some of his side were labeled as "overcompensated" and "not meeting expectations" by owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe . Experience all the excitement again Manchester United v Real Sociedad below:

Even during the week that The death warrant for Old Trafford was signed. , Manchester United demonstrated that their season isn’t over yet. When they fell behind Real Sociedad It appeared that things might wrap up in March, with Old Trafford facing a potential absence from European football for a whole year, maybe even playing their final continental match. However, after a remarkable turnaround, they defeated a team from the Basque Country, boosting United’s chances of making a return to the Champions League through Spain.

It was an excellent evening, for the aging field, the inexperienced coach, and the captain as well. At certain moments, it appeared that Bruno Fernandes is single-handedly striving to rescue something from United’s season.

Bruno Fernandes hits a new record for United

Thursday, March 13, 2025 at 10:32 PM

It has simply become a routine for him now. However, today's record surpasses even United's.

Based on data from Opta, Fernandes has now tallied four goals today, making him the player with the highest number of goal contributions in Europa League history, totaling 41 (24 goals and 17 assists).

Not bad, that.

Amorim: Rasmus is feeling very nervous, he'll likely find the back of the net soon.

Thursday, March 13, 2025 at 10:24 PM , Arthur Ferridge

Ruben Amorim is noticeably lighter on his feet as he trots out to give his post-match interview after a much needed win. Here’s his take:

On a hectic week: “It was a complete week. We show a little bit the future, we deal with problems in the present, and today a good performance. The physicality was there and in this competition, we can be the dominant team in physicality. we are learning about us, about different competitions, how to win games, how to draw games. It was a tough week but a good week.”

On developing the squad: “I think I am also learning how to use players like Casemiro and without a lot of options we are looking to put our players in the right positions. You can feel that they have more freedom. One game in Spain we tried to use the pace of Garnacho on the right and he showed me so many things, so I am trying to find the right solutions for the team.”

Regarding Hojlund: "Since we operate with two number tens, we require someone who can drive the team forward and initiate plays. He’s really stepping up in this role. His coordination improved significantly today; he even provided an assist for a goal. The only thing left is for him to find his way onto the scoresheet. He seems quite eager though. It won’t be long before he does."

Fernandes: Manchester United are becoming increasingly confident.

Thursday, March 13, 2025 at 10:04 PM , Arthur Ferridge

The player who scored three goals, Fernandes, commented on the evening's performance, stating that United are growing more self-assured with each passing day. Here’s what he said:

Regarding recent outcomes: "I believe that with these results and performances, as confidence grows, it becomes a significant factor in football and particularly within this club. Given that all eyes are upon us, we must deliver our best efforts consistently. It’s crucial that we support one another and maintain focus during training sessions."

On Amorim: “I think you can see it at times. The way the manager wants us to be, we are making good progress. It will be seen if we get results. We want to get better and we need to play better.”

Regarding Hojlund, "He’s a forward through and through. Forward players live for scoring goals. Within our team environment, everyone wants Rasmus to net as often as possible. In my latest goal, he drew the attention of the defender away, giving me an opening. Many contributions like these go unnoticed from afar but are highly valued within the locker room. Once his initial goal arrives, I’m confident he’ll start finding the back of the net consistently."

Relief for Manchester United, advancing to the final eight, as Richard Jolly describes a thrilling evening at Old Trafford:

Conclusively emphatic, this turned out to be one of the most thrilling evenings at Old Trafford this season. Bruno Fernandes’s hat-trick served as a well-deserved recognition for his exceptional display and recent stellar performances. Dorgu, Hojlund, and Zirkzee also put forth impressive showings.

Thursday, March 13, 2025 at 9:57 PM , Arthur Ferridge

Tonight was do-or-die for United, and they accomplished everything that was expected of them.

Before Dalot scored a late fourth goal during stoppage time, Bruno Fernandes' hat-trick primarily secured the victory for the home team. This win advances the Red Devils into the Europa League quarter-finals.

In their pursuit of Champions League qualification, which must be achieved by claiming victory in this tournament, United have made a significant advancement.

The red card was the difference maker for Sociedad, who were barely hanging on before Aramburu was dismissed. They were well beaten after he went for his early shower.

GOAL! Manchester United 4-1 Real Sociedad (5-2 Aggregate)

Thursday, March 13, 2025 at 9:53 PM , Arthur Ferridge

91min: It’s another final blow to Sociedad.

The visitors’ heads have gone down in a major way. Rasmus Hojlund picks up the ball on the left flank and drives to the byline before cutting the ball back to Diogo Dalot, who finishes emphatically into the roof of the net.

Aassist for Hojlund may not be exactly what he hoped to achieve tonight, but he shouldn't mind—it will do wonders for his self-assurance.

Thursday, March 13, 2025 at 9:51 PM , Arthur Ferridge

Sociedad infrequently push ahead, yet Oskarsson fumbles the ball near the penalty area and faces consequences as a result.

Garnacho gets the ball while turning and moves toward the middle of the field as Fernandes fills the gap. Garnacho spots him, and the team leader completes their hat trick in the lower-left part of the goal.

He had Hojlund present throughout the penalty area, yet he chooses to go it alone. Fernandes comes to United’s rescue once more.

Manchester United 2-1 Real Sociedad (3-2 Aggregate)

Thursday, March 13, 2025 at 9:46 PM , Arthur Ferridge

84min: United appear set for a third penalty of the evening as Dorgu falls in the box under pressure from Traore, but the referee reverses his decision after originally indicating a penalty with a point to the spot.

After closer examination, it appears to be a flawless tackle from Traore.

Manchester United won 2-1 against Real Sociedad with an aggregate score of 3-2.

Thursday, March 13, 2025 at 9:42 PM , Arthur Ferridge

81 mins: United have not been particularly sharp tonight.

Bruno sends a gentle through ball to Zirkzee — his attempt is strongly denied. Mazroui gathers the loose ball and spots Zirkzee once more, but he directs his header narrowly wide of the target.

The hosts easily had the chance to score four goals tonight, but Bruno’s two penalty kicks stand as the deciding factor.

Manchester United 2-1 Real Sociedad: Dorgu creates chaos

Thursday, March 13, 2025 at 9:33 PM , Jack Rathborn

Manchester United have the upper hand at present, here’s Richard Jolly providing fresh perspectives from Old Trafford:

Sociedad are struggling to keep Dorgu under control, particularly after Aramburu was sent off for fouling him and Elustondo receiving a yellow card. Dorgu’s previous match at Old Trafford ended with his dismissal from the field. This time he might relish being on the opposite side.

Manchester United 2-1 Real Sociedad (3-2 Aggregate)

Thursday, March 13, 2025 at 9:28 PM

68min: The challenge for United now is to focus on finishing this match professionally – all they need to do is make it through to the end.

Given that the cumulative difference remains only one goal, having another penalty for Fernandes would undoubtedly be beneficial.

Despite that, having a one-goal lead, a man advantage, and 20 minutes remaining should collectively ensure an easy conclusion for the home team.

RED CARD! Manchester United 2-1 Real Sociedad (3-2 Aggregate)

Thursday, March 13, 2025 at 9:24 PM , Arthur Ferridge

63 mins: Someone mentioned that Sociedad seems vulnerable defensively?

A disaster for the replacement Aramburu, who awkwardly tackles Dorgu during his breakthrough. This foul clearly prevents a scoring chance, leaving Sociedad with only ten players.

To add insult to injury, Oyarzabal receives a yellow card for disagreeing with the referee as he argues Aramburu’s point, making the night increasingly difficult for the Spanish team.

Can't the United team afford to lose this match now?

Manchester United won 2-1 against Real Sociedad with an aggregate score of 3-2.

Thursday, March 13, 2025 at 9:22 PM , Arthur Ferridge

61min: Sociedad appear to have changed to a more offensive setup, transitioning from a 4-3-3 to what might resemble a 3-4-3 formation.

So far, the rotation doesn't appear to have made a significant impact; however, they seem somewhat more aggressive in offense while appearing more flustered in defense.

Patrick Dorgu lauded for his influence against Real Sociedad

Thursday, March 13, 2025 at 9:14 PM , Jack Rathborn

An exciting match continues as United has made a strong start to this half. Here’s Richard Jolly providing the most recent update from Old Trafford:

“Dorgu won United's second penalty and he has been positive throughout, whether running forward or attempting a series of long-range shots. He isn't yet the most polished of players but this has been an encouraging night for the January signing.”

GOAL! Manchester United 2-1 Real Sociedad (3-2 Aggregate)

Thursday, March 13, 2025 at 9:11 PM , Arthur Ferridge

50min: Fernandes excels at his specialty and neatly slots the penalty home.

Usually, after a calm approach, there’s a hop, skip, and jump before he directs the ball past the goalkeeper.

Manchester United took an early lead both for the match and overall. It’s just what they needed right after halftime, scoring at this stage could be crucial; it seems unlikely that they would falter from here on out.

PENALTY! Manchester United 1-1 Real Sociedad (2-2 Aggregate)

Thursday, March 13, 2025 at 9:08 PM , Arthur Ferridge

48min: Yet another penalty for United! After Zirkzee’s attempt is blocked, Dorgu tries to capitalize on the follow-up but gets taken down by Elustondo from behind!

The referee pauses, considers it, and then indicates the penalty area.

Thursday 13 March 2025 20:59 , Arthur Ferridge

Speaking before the match, England legend Karen Carney again called on Sir Jim Ratcliffe to up his investment in Man United’s women’s side.

“Nobody expects Man Utd to not be focused on the men’s team, but it is disappointing and surprising for a club of such history that has been forward thinking and world-leading not to be investing in one of the fastest growing areas in sport,” Carney tells TNT Sports.

“I thought they wanted to be the best in class, leaders in their field, for me it’s sad and I’m disappointed, I hope it changes.”

The statistics paint an unfavorable picture for both teams.

Thursday, March 13, 2025 at 8:57 PM , Arthur Ferridge

Given the halftime statistics, it’s quite astonishing that the only points scored have been from penalties.

Between United and Sociedad, they've managed 17 attempts at goal collectively, with six of those being on target. This has resulted in an overall expected goals (non-penalty) value of 1.08.

The hosts have experienced more of the happiness, even though - Hojland’s missed opportunity accounts for 0.52 expected goals.

De Ligt launches a cross-field ball to Zirkzee but overhits it, and it dribbles out of play to close the half.

We began with a burst of activity when two penalties were awarded within the first 15 minutes, but so far, neither team has managed to score from general gameplay.

United have had the better of the opportunities, though, enjoying the better of the play after neutralizing Sociedad’s fast start.

In the end, we'll enter the second half with the same score as we had at the start: tied evenly.

The former West Ham player, Nayef Aguered, recently thwarted United's advance with a timely interception, earning his team a corner kick for their efforts.

Fernandes locates Dorgu near the penalty area and decides to take a quick shot on the half-volley, but unfortunately sends it slightly above the crossbar.

Thursday, March 13, 2025 at 8:33 PM , Jack Rathborn

Our senior football correspondent Richard Jolly has the latest from Old Trafford:

An intense beginning here with an incredibly engaging match as well. Rasmus Hojlund has made a significant impact beyond just earning the penalty. The Danish forward is aggressively pursuing the Real Sociedad defenders. Additionally, he’s receiving better support than normal, demonstrating that whenever this happens, he becomes quite dangerous.

30min: The man could very likely be under a curse.

Zirkzee does incredibly well to break into the box before squaring a perfect ball to Rasmus Hojlund, who fires goalward, his shot rolling wide of the far post.

He yells out of raw frustration. As the saying goes, he couldn't score a goal to save his life at that moment.

So far today, he has been positioning himself correctly. It seems just a matter of time before a goal comes his way.

He charges towards the box to connect with Fernandes' cross and gets knocked down by Zubeldia - the penalty is obvious.

Manchester United 0-1 Real Sociedad (1-2 Aggregate)

Thursday, March 13, 2025 at 8:13 PM , Jack Rathborn

Our senior football correspondent Richard Jolly has the latest from Old Trafford:

“Mikel Oyarzabal has a history of scoring against English opposition. After his late winner in the Euro 2024 final, an early penalty here. Judging from the noise the Sociedad fans are making, they are dreaming of a final in Bilbao, perhaps against Athletic Bilbao.”

An unfortunate beginning for Manchester United, unless Onana can rescue their situation.

Thursday, March 13, 2025 at 7:29 PM , Arthur Ferridge

Paul Scholes has serious doubts about Manchester United’s stadium development plan.

“It is all a bit pie in the sky,” the Manchester Untied legend told TNT Sports before kickoff after Omar Berrada outlines his plan to finance the club amid a £2bn investment in new facilities.

“Words are cheap,” he added. “I won’t believe it till I see it.”

Early images of the planned £2bn stadium were announced on Tuesday to great acclaim - the stadium’s distinctive silhouette, featuring three massive spires and a grand canopy, will house 100,000 fans.

Before the match began, Amorim described the stadium as "highly thrilling," yet considering his recent difficulties, it raises doubts about whether he'll have the chance to lead his team from there again.

Man United CEO Omar Berrada adds that United will be financing the stadium, but says they are already preparing for the investment and planning to avoid impacting on-pitch performances.
